Project Overview

An overview of the MILESECURE-2050 project

The proposal “Multidimensional Impact of the Low-carbon European Strategy on Energy Security, and Socio-Economic Dimension up to 2050 perspective” (i.e. MILESECURE-2050) wishes to contribute to the general objective of the FP7 SSH 2012 area 8.2.2 (Regional, territorial and social cohesion), that is “to provide new knowledge on the processes (including social innovation) and policies which underpin regional, territorial and social cohesion, in line with the Europe 2020 Strategy and other relevant policies”.

Particularly, MILESECURE-2050 seeks to identify the modes through which energy security is defined and managed at the European, national and local scales, focusing on energy transition towards a low carbon society, as the final target for the securitisation of energy supply,  distribution and consumption.  This means to explore how the different dimensions of energy security are declined and addressed at different scales, from the global scale to the regional and local ones. It also requires the combination of the different notions of energy security to produce quantitative and qualitative models and scenarios for the evolution of energy security within and outside the EU, making reference to geopolitical tensions, economic factors, social cohesion, technological options and environmental issues.

In particular, the research deals with economic and social issues related to energy that are increasingly considered as a key challenge of the Europe 2020 Strategy (the 20/20/20 targets and the Resource-efficient Europe Flagship). It is specifically related to the topic “European energy security, including its economic dimension” (SSH.2012.2.2-2).
